The Goal

5:30 AM Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep click snooze

5:40 AM Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep click alarm off

5:45 AM look at the clock....GO BACK TO SLEEP RANDY!...roll over

5:55 AM Why can't I fall back to sleep? I know I need to run...I'll just skip today. Why are you running anyway? You had a good week last week, you can catch up tomorrow...you need your sleep. I can't go to sleep! All I can think of at this moment in time is this....

No I didn't watch a World War 2 movie marathon last night. You see this picture is the goal. The Marine Corps Marathon finish line is at the Iwo Jima Memorial. It is my goal. Each step I take gets me one step closer to this finish line.

I had the privilege of visiting this memorial in May of 2010 and other than the Arlington Memorial, this had the biggest effect on me emotionally. It is an awesome, larger than life structure that is sure to take any American's breath away, but it was made even more special that day. We just happened to be visiting the memorial while a group of Honor Flight Vets. In case you're unaware of this organization, their mission is:

Transport America's veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those
memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices.
I got a chance to speak to one of these heroes.

He walked around and pointed at each of the major battles in the Pacific, and told me that he saw action at each place. It was a moment that I will never ever forget. I can't think of Iwo Jima without thinking about this man, and can't think about the Marine Corps Marathon without thinking of the Iwo Jima Memorial.

So I crawled my lazy rear end out of bed and ran 8 miles today.

In comparison to the sacrifices these men and women made, a marathon seems so small, but I tell you this, I'm going to use every inch of the 26.2 miles to thank every Marine and service man and woman that I can...and the only way I'll get there is by getting up on steamy hot mornings like today and getting myself out the door.

What's motivating you today? What's your GOAL?

*Please consider making a donation to the Honor Flight Network. Time is running out for the World War II vets to take these trips. http://www.honorflight.org/donate/index.cfm Thank you
